Individual Assessment (Ability) - Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale

STANFORD-BINET INTELLIGENCE SCALE, 4TH EDITION, 1986

AUTHORS: Robert L. Thorndike, Elizabeth P. Hagen, Jerom M. Sattler
RANGE: Age 2 to Adult
SUMMARY

The Stanford-Binet has been the criterion for other measures of mental ability since 1916, when Lewis M. Terman completed his American revision of the 1908 Binet-Simon scale. As such, the Stanford Binet has contributed significantly to the study of cognitive development.

The 1986 edition of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale maintains historical continuity with previous editions by retaining the most contemporarily useful item types and the adaptive-testing format from the earlier editions. Overall, it is a thoroughly modern test in terms of content, scales, and testing procedures, yet users of the earlier editions are familiar and feel comfortable with the newer edition. A three-level hierarchical cognitive-ability model, which incorporates the g-factor and 4 cognitive areas constitutes the theoretical framework for the Fourth Edition. The model and the 15 tests used to measure the 4 cognitive areas (Verbal Reasoning, Abstract/Visual Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Short-Term Memory) are based on extensive cognitive research over the past two decades, the authors' research and analysis of the L-M Edition 1972 standardization data, and extensive tryouts of old and new item types.

Scores available for each test include raw scores, scaled scores, percentile ranks, and age equivalents. For each area, scaled scores and percentile ranks are available. Examiners can also derive composite scores for any combination of area scores.

TESTS:

Vocabulary, Comprehension, Absurdities, Verbal Relations, Pattern Analysis, Copying, Matrices, Paper Folding and Cutting, Quantitative, Number Series, Equation Building, Bead Memory, Memory for Sentences, Memory for Digits, Memory for Objects
